Kartik Purnima mela ends, 35L devotees take holy dip

Meerut: The Kartik Purnima mela in Hapur districts Garh Mukhteshwar area ended on Monday after more than 35 lakh people took a holy dip in the river. Officials said that over 50,000 temporary tents were set up on the sandy Ganga ghats by devotees who travelled from different states of the country as well as from abroad to attend the fair.Hapur additional superintendent of police RK Agarwal said that almost 80 per cent of people had left for their homes on Monday and the rest were expected to return by by the next day. "This year, the fair ended on a positive note without any untoward incident or cases of drowning being reported. Traffic restrictions will be lifted once the place has been vacated,"Agarwal told TOI.The Kartik Purnima Ganga Snan mela, also known as the Mini Kumbh of North India is celebrated on the ghats of the Ganga. A huge fair is organised in Garh Mukhteshwar of Hapur. Devotees set up temporary tents on the riverbed and stay there during the fair. Meanwhile on Sunday, two devotees were injured in celebratory firing at the Ganga ghat in Tigri area. "Kuan pujan ceremony was being performed at the Ganga ghats when two people were injured in celebratory firing. The incident was reported under the Amroha police station limits and the officials concerned were informed. The Chief Medical Officer of Bulandshahr stated that an investigation is underway and appropriate action will be taken against those responsible.
