Muzaffarnagar: A nearly 200-year-old mazar (tomb), purportedly of a Sufi saint, was razed by officials with a bulldozer in UPs Mainpuri district on Tuesday. This follows a recent Allahabad high court order against "encroaching on state land". A few other graves on the "one bigha plot" were also partly razed in the presence of a heavy police force.Bhogaon sub-divisional magistrate (SDM), Sandhya Sharma, said, "The encroachment was removed on the HC orders after a petition filed by an aggrieved local villager, Ram Ratan (the land owner).Notably, the government land was allocated to the petitioner for agricultural purposes. But it was encroached upon by some people."cThe SDM added: "In official records, the land in Nagla Kaddi under Bhogaon tehsil actually belongs to Ratan. A few months ago, he had approached the SDM office and later filed a petition before the HC. The SDMs office issued a notice to encroachers. However, there was no response and therefore this action had to be taken."Incidentally, the Ram Ratan vs Saleem Khan and five others (all local villagers) case -- which reportedly dates back to 2021 -- was pending before the Mainpuri district court. The land was allocated in the 1970s.Khans lawyer, Amit Kumar Yadav, said, "This mazar is nearly 200 years old and revered by Muslims and Hindus of the area. The SDM office had allocated the land, with the tomb and other graves on it, to Ram Ratan. He added, Though the case was pending before district court, the administration and Ratan didnt mention it in the HC and managed to get the order passed. We plan to approach the HC."We also published the following articles recentlyTwist in Chheda Nagars 50-year land saga as court stays collectors orderA recent court order has stayed the declaration of Chheda Nagar as state government land, impacting redevelopment plans.
