Watchman burnt alive as hut catches fire

SHAMLI: A 55-year-old watchman at a cane weighing centre was charred to death after the makeshift hut he was resting in caught fire in Rangana village here, police said. Superintendent of police Abhishek, who goes only by his first name, said the incident came to light on Saturday morning. A sugar mill had set up the weighing centre at Rangana to purchase sugarcane from local farmers and Omprakash Kori from the village was entrusted with safeguarding the purchased cane and the inventory. His family created a ruckus at the spot, alleging that Omprakash was murdered. His son, Nitin Kori, filed complaint but cops are awaiting the post-mortem report before taking further action.Sugar mills officials offered the family compensation of Rs 2 lakh and an assurance of employment for the kin.
