Maharashtra Highway Police (MHP) had launched the 'Mrityunjay Doots' scheme on March 1 across the State with an aim to provide medical aid to accident victims within an hour of the accident (golden hour). Local villagers employees of dhabas and petrol pumps doctors around National and State highways across the State have been trained as 'Mrityunjay Doots' by the Highway Police. According to statistics provided by MHP the 'Mrityunjay Doots' have provided help in 153 road accidents and admitted 286 seriously injured accident victims to hospitals. Additional Director General of Police (ADGP) Traffic and Highway Police Dr Bhushankumar Upadhyay informed 'The Hitavada' that a total of 5012 volunteers have been appointed as 'Mrityunjay Doots' across the State.

Maharashtra Highway Police (MHP) had launched the Mrityunjay Doots scheme on March 1 across the State with an aim to provide medical aid to accident victims within an hour of the accident (golden hour). Local villagers employees of dhabas and petrol pumps doctors around National and State highways across the State have been trained as Mrityunjay Doots by the Highway Police. This trained manpower of 5012 persons is providing immediate medical aid to accident victims. According to statistics provided by MHP the Mrityunjay Doots have provided help in 153 road accidents and admitted 286 seriously injured accident victims to hospitals. Lives of 250 accident victims were saved from March 1 to May 15. Additional Director General of Police (ADGP) Traffic and Highway Police Dr Bhushankumar Upadhyay informed The Hitavada that a total of 5012 volunteers have been appointed as Mrityunjay Doots across the State. These volunteers are providing immediate help to accident victims. There are 98 National Highways and 378 State Highways in Maharashtra. Most fatal accident cases are witnessed in Nashik Pune Ahmednagar Solapur and Latur. Quoting statistics of road accidents Dr Upadhyay said more than 1.5 lakh persons lose their lives in road accidents across the country every year. “More than 62 per cent lives of accident victims can be saved if they receive medical treatment within an hour” he added. At present it takes around 90 minutes to two hours to rush the accident victim to hospital. Locals are an important part of the new scheme as they are the first respondents to any accident. The Highway Police have also roped in local police local government bodies health department officials in the initiative. All these Doots have been given basic training on how to respond when there is an accident. They would also be given stretchers. The Doots will also have phone numbers of local hospitals and ambulances.
