City developer creates mobile app for farmers Ajinkya Datalkar Staff Reporter : App gathers weather data from NASA and local Weather Department A city-based application developer Ajinkya Datalkar has developed a mobile application called Agrolly for farmers to help them fight effects of climate change. The app uses machine learning to determine crop water and temperature requirements. The application is an innovative concept which uses modern technologies to equip farmers in shaping effective response to climate change. The App gets its data from two major sources that is short-term weather forecast (hourly and weekly) from the Weather Department; and weather data for the past 5 years from NASA. The 5 years data taken from NASA is further processed and based on the past information weather for the next one year is predicted. Once the weather forecast for next one year is generated this information is pushed to the users cellphone and it not only displays the weather forecast for next one year in advance but also gives meaningful insights like crop water requirements and temperature requirements. This information can be used to determine the types of problems the farmers are going to face in advance. Ajinkya did his Masters in Computer Science from Pace University New York. Last year in 2020 he wrote more than 3000 lines of code in less than 25 days and won IBMs call for code 2020 challenge. This year he launched the app for farmers in India. The application can also answer five major questions of farmers like What to plant?; When to plant?; How much to water?; What are the temperature requirements?; and When to harvest? This app is specifically designed for farmers but can be used by anyone is passionate about farming gardening or just plants or crops in general. The app currently has information for 7000 cities villages and towns of India. Ajinkya developed the app with two things in mind that is help farmers make informed decisions and increase their agricultural yield and help improve the economic conditions of the farmers. The app is available on the Google Play Store for Android and will be launched on the App store for Iphone soon.
