Court nod to lawyer to table ideas on installing rumble strips to curb speed

Nagpur: The Nagpur bench of Bombay high court on Wednesday allowed a lawyer, who had filed a PIL demanding speed breakers in the citys busy areas, to assist Nagpur Improvement Trust (NIT) in installing rumble strips to control traffic and reduce accidents.The lawyer informed the court that he had conducted some research, and requested permission to assist the civic body in this regard, claiming the rumbles (speed breakers) are not properly installed.Petitioner Sundeep Badana had filed a PIL in HC contending that with increasing vehicular traffic in the city, and failure to abide by the speed limit, the number of accidents has jumped multifold, particularly in Hazaripahad, Gorewada and Dabha areas.Quoting information released under RTI, he contended that 247 cases of rash driving were registered, of which 42 resulted in death due to negligence, and 65 cases have caused grievous injury in Gittikhadan police station jurisdiction from January till November last year. He also shared a photograph of a rumbler installed at Gorewada, Mankapur Ring Road, with the judges.Earlier, assistant government pleader Amit Madiwale, after taking instructions from PWD executive engineer working on the World Bank project, informed that out of the six spots identified by the petitioner, steps have been taken to provide speed breakers or rumble strips at four places.The petitioner in person does not dispute that at four spots such steps have been taken. He submits that he be permitted to submit his suggestions to the NIT chairman in this matter on the basis of research undertaken by him.
