Fireworks & bad ozone can trigger lung issues

Nagpur: Diwali and the onset of winter bring joy, but they could spell trouble for people with respiratory disorders. Well-known doctors from city have flagged the heightened risk and suggest precautions to be taken.Diwali is a time of celebration but fireworks and other sources of air pollution during the festival can trigger respiratory diseases, doubling the risk for patients with asthma, COPD, and other lung disorders, said pulmonologist Dr Ashok Arbat. Patients having COPD, asthma, or other lung issues should remain aware of both outdoor and indoor pollution sources during Diwali, stresses chest physician Dr Parimal Deshpande. Skin and ear irritation, sore throat, watery eyes, and many more problems will become common now. Patients with respiratory conditions, including Covid-19 related lung fibrosis, should stay away from smoke. Patients with COPD and asthma should avoid indoor dust and firecracker smoke as well, he said. Lung expert Dr Swapnil Bakamwar pointed out that transition period from rainy season to winter can elevate ground-level ozone, causing breathing difficulties and other symptoms. Smog in the atmosphere also worsens respiratory disorders. So, its time for those living with asthma and COPD to take additional care, he said. Experts emphasize that Diwali fireworks not only affect human health but also contribute to environmental pollution. Fireworks also release toxic elements that heighten cancer risks and affect pregnant women. Its advised to avoid exposure to harmful fumes during Diwali to prevent miscarriages and hinder childrens growth, said gynaecologist Dr Deepti Shende and added that preventive measures are crucial to protect individuals, especially children and seniors. Patients with allergies too should limit exposure to outdoor and indoor air pollution by avoiding smoke, dust and pollution sources. Its essential to have medications readily available and follow prescribed treatment plans. Wearing masks when outdoors can help reduce exposure to pollution. Staying well-hydrated and consuming warm, nutritious foods can also support respiratory health.
