Cops raid 52 locations for drug abuse

Nagpur: City polices special teams and crime branch jointly conducted sweeping raids at 52 locations against narcotics and drug peddlers in the late evening of Monday. The raids are expected to be conducted till the early dawns.Deputy chief minister Devendra Fadnavis, also guardian minister of the district, had stated earlier this week that his government aims to make Maharashtra drug-free and also target the city-based peddlers to end the narcotics trade from Nagpur.Sources said that police commissioner Amitesh Kumar had on Monday chaired a meeting of the crime branch officials in which the strategy of going strong against the peddlers and consumers were being announced. The lists of the accused related to the past narcotics cases were also being distributed for fresh vigilance and searches. The peddler, A Alli alias Abdul Rahman, was arrested in September for possessing 1.1kg of ganja and is facing another ganja case. The police prepared a report against him and recommended his detention to the district collector, who ordered his detention based on the recommendation. The order was served to the peddler in the Coimbatore Central Prison.2 persons arrested in drug raid at AgondaTwo individuals were arrested in a drug raid near Saleri bridge, Canacona. The police conducted the raid following a tip-off and caught the suspects red-handed with 790 grams of a narcotic substance, believed to be charas, worth Rs 7.9 lakh. The accused will be presented before the judicial magistrate for remand.Maratha reservation agitation: Security increased at Maharashtra deputy CM Devendra Fadnaviss residence in NagpurSecurity has been increased at the residence of Maharashtra Deputy Chief Minister Devendra Fadnavis in Nagpur due to ongoing protests over the Maratha reservation demand. The Nagpur Commissioner of Police ordered the increase in security measures in response to the Maratha quota agitation. The hometown of Fadnavis, Nagpur, is witnessing planned protests by Maratha quota supporters. In response to the situation, state-run bus services have been suspended in five Marathwada districts, and curfew and Internet shutdowns have been imposed in parts of Beed. The Chief Minister has appealed for calm and urged political parties to avoid escalating the situation.
