Nagpur: Asias biggest government medical college and hospital (GMCH) at Nagpur spread across 200 acres is undergoing a complete makeover ahead of its three-day Platinum Jubilee celebrations beginning December 1. President Draupadi Murmu will be the chief guest at the function. Large-scale beautification works, repairs, renovation and resurfacing of roads etc, are under way near the venue at GMCH.Already in the news over lack of hygiene and sanitation facilities, the situation at the tertiary care centre appears not up to the mark.On Tuesday, TOI found garbage piled up at the disposal shed, and a lot of garbage thrown in the woods towards the girls hostel. Sanitary workers said the private agency appointed by Nagpur Municipal Corporation (NMC) had not lifted the black garbage bags since Friday. The piling up of hundreds of bags is causing an unbearable foul stench near the waste shed. The waste lying around, including leftover food, attracts stray animals on the campus.Deputy municipal commissioner (solid waste management) Dr Gajendra Mahalle said the operator cited lack of access for not lifting the waste. The operator told us that road works are under way at GMCH and they couldnt reach the shed. The collection truck returned twice, he said.GMCH workers said the other operator, who collects biomedical waste, was regularly picking up waste. Though resurfacing of road is going on, the campus has multiple alternate routes. The operator said their truck was stuck the entire night on Friday as the gates were closed. They allowed only ambulances to enter. Our truck cant enter from other routes. We will clear the bags on Wednesday, the operator said. Some patients were also seen urinating in the open, and even in the corridors, or the corners of wards. Several buildings are getting fresh paint, but choked and leaking pipelines continue to make things messy.Dr Avinash Gawande, GMCH medical superintendent, said he will look into the waste lifting issue. Regarding availability of public toilets, he said, PWD has been asked to make a plan for new sewer lines. New tank was installed to run e-toilets. Toilets at surgery OPD, near Ward 46, gynaecology and paediatric departments have been opened for public use.Dr Gawande also said those shut because of choked lines were being checked to see if water flows freely.
