94-year-old alumni, Magsaysay and Padma awardees to reunite at GMCH

Nagpur: The 75th platinum jubilee celebrations of the government medical college and hospital (GMCH), which is Asias biggest medical college campus, on December 2 will witness a rare reunion of old boys and girls, right from a 94-year-old alumus to 17 Padma awardees and three Magsaysay winners besides stalwarts holding top government posts.President Droupadi Murmu would be honouring Dr BJ Subedar, a 94-year-old general medicine practitioner in Nagpur, among others for their notable contribution to society.Dr Subhedar was among the first batch to pass out from GMCH which started in July 1947. Dr Subhedar also served as professor and head in the department of medicine at GMCH.The college has produced many personalities who not only made a name in the medical field but also social and political spheres. The four Magasaysay awardees are Baba Amte, Prakash Amte, and Dr Abhay and Dr Rani Bang who took up the cause of neglected tribal community in remote Gadchiroli district.One of the most prominent achievers of GMCH is the late Congress leader Dr Shrikant Jichkar who held a record number of degrees after completing his MBBS and MD.Rajya Sabha member Dr Vikas Mahatme, Dr Sanjay Mukherjee, vice chairman and MD, CIDCO, Belapur, Dr Swati Kulkarni, consul general at Atlanta, USA, Dr Amit Telang, consul general, Germany, are among the 18 IAS officers likely to attend the event.Around 55 alumni who joined armed forces are also expected to be a part of the event. GMCH dean Dr Raj Gajbhiye said the next big thing would be the centenary year celebrations. Probably, most of the alumni from our time may not be alive to witness it. Therefore, this is going to be a once-in-a-lifetime and memorable event for us, he said.The dean said Dr Subhedar is very much active and still practising medicine.Over 2,000 alumni now settled in USA, Europe, Australia and other countries have registered for the event.Dr Gajbhiye said the President would be inaugurating the platinum jubilee celebration on December 2. For next 20 days, workshops, guest lectures, conferences would be held in different departments. On December 22 and 23, the concluding function would be held especially for overseas alumni, he said.Besides the scientific programmes, an art and literature festival highlighting the artistic talents of alumni is also planned. A special souvenir and coffee table book, chronicling the institutions 75-year journey, will be available for all attendees. This celebration promises to be an extraordinary event, a testament to the institutions commitment to advancing medical education and research, he said.Dr Gajbhiye said GMCH remains a beacon of excellence in medical education, healthcare, and research in Central India, continuing to make significant contributions to the field of medicine and the well-being of society.
