Nagpur: Ruling out shifting of the 857-bed state-of-the-art Dr Babasaheb Ambedkar Hospital from North Nagpur, deputy CM Devendra Fadnavis on Saturday reiterated the ambitious project shall remain at the originally proposed location at Indora in North Nagpur. There were talks of building it on private public partnership (PPP) which is why I suggested that if we have to build a hospital on PPP, then let another hospital come in Mihan. The Ambedkar hospital shall come through government funding only as PPP model would make healthcare costly affair for the North Nagpur residents, Fadnavis said during an interaction with media at his official residence in city. The detailed project report (DPR) of the proposed Dr Babasaheb Ambedkar superspecialty Institute of Medical Education and Research (BASIMER) at Indora is ready for over two years beside the state cabinet approval but execution of the crucial project is nowhere in sight.Currently, Dr Babasaheb Ambedkar Hospital and Research Centre (BAHRC), administrated by Indira Gandhi Government Medical College (IGGMC), is running outpatient department (OPD) and diagnostics services to the vast population of North Nagpur. The absence of a full-fledged tertiary care centre in the area forces residents to travel to IGGMC or GMCH for treatment. The project approved by then MVA government on October 6, 2021, was estimated to cost a whopping Rs1,165 crore on the over 8acre land at Indora. As per the DPR, the 615-bed projects civil works would cost Rs879 crore alone. The remaining Rs286 crore are estimates for salaries and other related expenses. The bed strength would go up to 857 in a phased manner. While the project hit a roadblock over PPP model during MVA government, it remained stalled over shifting it from Indora to South-West Nagpur in Fadnavis electoral constituency after the Mahayuti government came to power. The hospital is a dream project of North Nagpur MLA and former guardian minister Nitin Raut, who first proposed it in 1997.Raut said the deputy CM has been assuring about it for long but the date for ground-breaking ceremony hasnt been announced.
