MSRTC drivers using phones while driving risk suspension

Nagpur: The Maharashtra State Road Transport Corporation (MSRTC) has warned its drivers of action, including suspension from service, if they were found using mobile phones while driving.MSRTC PRO Abhijeet Bhosale said that though the provisions against use of mobile phones while driving were old, a circular to this effect was issued for the first time.The MSRTC had received complaints from passengers and public representatives about ST drivers flouting the norms. Many passengers took to social media to share videos showing ST drivers speaking on phone while driving.Speaking on phone or listening to music or worse watching movie clips while driving are dangerous acts as they affect the drivers concentration and create insecurity in the minds of passengers, the circular stated. The students snatched the phone of a construction worker and fled on a two-wheeler. However, two residents chased and caught them, handing them over to the police. The phone was recovered, and the students were remanded in judicial custody. The students are identified as third-year BBA and BCom students studying in a college in Koyambedu.Centre plans agency to drive overall transportation strategyThe Indian government is considering the establishment of an Integrated Transport Planning Agency (ITPA) to coordinate transportation strategy across all modes of surface transport, railways, shipping, and civil aviation. The proposal is similar to the departments of transport in the United States and Australia, and aims to bring down logistics costs by promoting coordinated planning. The ITPA would be responsible for long-term planning, meeting national goals such as net zero emissions, and improving coordination between the central and state governments on infrastructure projects.
