Nagpur: A young couple were all praise for the neonatal intensive care unit (NICU) of GMCH when their one-day-old baby boy came back from the jaws of death after battling for survival for 20 days. The couple were blessed with the child on October 23, after five years of marriage and two miscarriages. However, their joy was shattered when the baby, born with low birth weight, stopped taking feed and suffered uncontrollable convulsions.Later, the baby was diagnosed with meningitis, a severe infection of the brain.Dr Avinash Gawande, medical superintendent of GMCH, who is also a paediatrician, said survival rate in underweight babies is poor in this condition. Dr Abhishek Madhura, incharge of NICU, said the baby was immediately started on broad spectrum antibiotics to fight the serious infection. The baby was on ventilator for three days and oxygen support later. Investigations revealed deficiency of Vitamin D3 and calcium. The mother too was tested and found to have similar deficiencies. The baby responded to our line of treatment and started taking feed from mother, said Dr Madhura. The clinical management was done under the supervision of head of the department Dr Manish Tiwari and dean Dr Raj Gajbhiye. After weening the baby off ventilator and oxygen support, the doctors kept the baby on mothers feed for a day to confirm complete recovery. Look at the baby, it is very active and doing well, said Dr Madhura.Dr Madhura said premature and low birth weight babies are prone to get infection. They require intensive care team of doctors and nurses as such babies require ventilatory support and medicine for maintaining BP. With astute thinking, dedication and hard work, such high risk babies can be saved from the clutches of death, Dr Madhura said.Dr Gawande said the parents reposed faith in a GMC when everyone asked them to shift to a private hospital. Mostly serious patients are brought with poor chance of survival. Yet our doctors and paramedics work hard to ensure patient recover, he said. Periodic development assessment, physical and opthalamic checkups will be needed later for this baby, he said.We also published the following articles recentlyMother, nine-month-old baby electrocuted in BengaluruA nine-month-old baby girl and her 23-year-old mother died of electrocution in Bengaluru.
