Telangana polls & Maoist bandh call coincide, police on their toes

Nagpur: Gadchiroli police have sounded a red alert in the Red Corridor, following increased violence by Maoists in the run-up to their November 30 bandh call that coincides with assembly elections in neighbouring Telangana. Guerrilla movements are under surveillance, particularly in their Abhujmadh stronghold — a strategic location that straddles Maharashtra, Chhattisgarh and is in proximity to Telangana.Police have also issued an advisory to government officials and politicians not to step into Maoist-hit regions, where intelligence agencies reported frequent movement of ultras.Sources said the government brass has sought 24x7 inputs and directed swift action on tip-offs.Around 10 C-60 commando units guard areas between Aheri and Sironcha in Gadchiroli that shares borders with Telangana districts of Jayashankar Bhupalpally, Mancherial and Komaram Bheem. Four check posts have been set up at Aheri, two at Sironcha and one at Asar Alli to choke supply of liquor, cash and arms to Telangana state.Maoists may try to disrupt polling and trigger panic among voters. Police are trying to plug passages between Gadchiroli and Telangana districts to curb infiltration on election day.On the Chhattisgarh side, Gadchiroli police are keeping a hawks eye on the forested stretch of Bhamragarh and Etapalli, where Moaists have been posing a challenge to security forces. Sources said Maoists use Abujhmad hills to attack in neighbouring states.A senior official said, around 27 C-60 commando units, three quick response teams and two special action groups are being deployed along with bomb detection and disposal squads to defuse improvised explosive devices.Gadchiroli SP Neelotpal said security forces are ready to tackle any eventuality. Lalsu Velda is the 260th civilian victim of Maoists since 2009.Chhattisgarh: Maoists torch 14 vehicles engaged in construction works in DantewadaMaoists set fire to 14 vehicles and machines involved in construction works in Dantewada district. A group of people dressed as villagers burned the vehicles and machines, causing significant losses. The Maoists ruptured fuel tanks and poured fuel on the vehicles. The incident took place in Bhansi at a construction site, and the workers hid in their temporary sheds, avoiding any casualties.Maoists torch 14 vehicles engaged in construction works in Chhattisgarhs DantewadaMaoists set fire to 14 vehicles and machines involved in construction works in Dantewada district, Chhattisgarh. The vehicles and machines belonged to private companies. The loss is being assessed. A group of Maoists, dressed as villagers, arrived at the construction site in the early hours of Monday and set the vehicles and machines ablaze. Police have launched a search operation in the area. Naxalites have previously protested against construction and development activities in the region.
