Nagpur: When the special court finally delivers its verdict next month in the 21-year-old NDCCB case, the eleventh accused, who played a key role in the conspiracy, may read the news somewhere in hiding. Kanan Mevawala, a mystery woman and the last person against whom an offence was registered in the NDCCB case, has never been traced.Mevawala was CEO of M/s Home Trade, the company through which NDCCB and a number of other banks invested funds in government securities (g-secs).She had been arrested in Mumbai by the CBI in a similar case involving Home Trade and Raghuvanshi Bank in June 2002.After she was released on bail, she never turned up. Her parents too filed a missing complaint about her. Her signature was found on all the allegedly forged documents like contract notes, adjustment entries, and other papers related to the government securities. Home Trade and its associates had taken funds to the tune of Rs125 crore from NDCCB, but the G-secs were never delivered either in physical or demat form. Yet, they were shown as traded to gain profits. She was also one of the authorized signatories in Home Trades papers.Even as all others, including the then bank chairman Sunil Kedar were either arrested or surrendered before the state CID here, she did not turn up at all. In her 20s then, she was known to be part of all the meetings with different banks and Home Trade. In the last two decades, not much has been said about her with the cops handling the case now.Her matter was removed from rest of the case to be dealt with separately. This was because all the accused need to be present together at the time of framing charges.
