107 Pakur students suffer food poisoning, stable

Dumka: A total of 107 students of the Pakudiya-based Sido Kanhu Murmu Memorial Residential School fell ill after having dinner at the hostel on Wednesday.Pakur deputy commissioner (DC) Mrintunjay Kumar Baranwal said, Most of the children developed symptoms of food poisoning soon after having their meal on Wednesday night. A student found a lizards tail in the vegetable served for dinner and raised an alarm. Many students had taken the meal by then. They soon showed symptoms of food poisoning, including vomiting.The district administration transported the affected kids to a local community health centre, from where the critically ill students were shifted to a hospital located at Rampurhat in West Bengal. All children have been released, he added.Pakur civil surgeon Dr Mantu Kumar Tekriwal confirmed the incident.DC Baranwal added, We will take appropriate action against the school management. The officials of the district administration inspected the campus and found the tail of a lizard in the meal served to the children.School owner Stephen Marandi admitted that the lizard was found in the vegetable served to a child. A few children, seemingly scared after spotting the lizard, started vomiting. All the affected belong to the junior section. The commission has demanded action against those responsible and a report to be filed within 30 days. The commission stated that this incident showed the irresponsibility of those involved in monitoring the meals and called for serious action. Guidelines require schools to procure quality ingredients and have the meals tasted by members of the school management committee before serving them to children. Mandatory testing of food samples is also required to ensure nutritional standards are met.
