Elephants feast on Chakulia paddy fields in East S’bhum

Jamshedpur: The residents of Rajbasa, Dighi, Badamar, and Karakocha villages located at the foothills of Sunsunia forest under Chakulia block in East Singhbhum are reportedly pelting stones and fireballs at herds of elephants to chase them away from the paddy fields since Saturday. A total of 27 elephants have separated into different herds and started devouring crops.Meanwhile, another herd of five elephants blocked the street passing through Karakocha village that connects Ghatshila with Chakulia. The pedestrians and the motorists are now facing problems in negotiating the stretch.Since January till July, Chakulia has reported 10 cases of human-elephant conflict, including three deaths,.The forest range officer of Chakulia, Digvijay Singh, said teams of officials, including 30 foresters, have been deployed at the identified sites to maintain round-the-clock vigilance and drive away the herd. Quick Response Teams (QRTs) have been deployed to stop the elephants from destroying the paddy fields. Further, torch and firecrackers would be distributed among the villagers to drive away the jumbos, he added. The worker was part of a team trying to chase the tusker away from the village. The elephant suddenly attacked and killed the worker. This is the first human casualty due to an elephant attack in Ajara. The area has been experiencing increasing man-animal conflicts, with around 2,500 cases of farm losses reported each year due to elephant attacks.
