76-yr-old man duped of Rs 3L by fraudster in power scam

THANE: A 76-year-old man was recently duped of Rs 3 lakh by an online scamster who posed as an official from the power company and sent him a message saying that his electricity bill was due.The police said the victim, a resident of Majiwada in Thane, received a text message on his cellphone stating that his power connection will be disconnected due to non-payment of bill. The sender also mentioned a support number and told him to call, the police said quoting the complaint.When the victim called the number the accused asked him to download AnyDesk app. The caller further told him to complete the process to avert any disconnection, but the victim got suspicious and disconnected the call. He immediately called on his banks customer care number and asked them to block his debit card but in vain. Later, he received a text saying Rs 2.97 lakh has been debited from his account. The cops said the bank authorities told him to file a complaint with the police. Thereafter, the victim approached the Kapurbawdi police station and registered a case under the Information Technology act.An officer said they have launched a probe into the crime and are yet to arrest the accused. West Bengal CM Mamata Banerjee, who was supposed to lead the protest, has passed the responsibility to party general secretary Abhishek Banerjee due to her recent injury. Around 3,000 TMC members are expected to reach Delhi by Sunday night.
