THANE: The Thane municipal corporation is working on introducing free libraries in all its school classrooms as an attempt to inculcate reading habits among the younger generation that is hooked on to cellphones and other electronic gadgets, officials informed. The facility will be introduced in all the 131 civic schools operating within the city, wherein, the open library will consist of books based on the respective class strength and aptitude of students. All types of fiction, non-fiction, biographies and inspirational books will be made available for the students within their classroom libraries. The students would be encouraged to access and read the books during their free periods or even during lunch hour.Though the students will not have to enrol for subscription or pay fees which is prevalent in most libraries, they would however be encouraged to write their review about the book that they have read recently in a special passbook provided to them.A majority of students from the current generation are more drawn towards digital gadgets or virtual books and their habit of reading books is waning. We feel that this exercise will encourage them to spend more time reading books than on cellphones or video games. We are starting this initiative for the students between class V and above and even if a small volume of students prefer reading actual books over cellphones, we would feel that the drive has paid off, informed a civic official. The pilot initiative will be launched at the Kisan Nagar school number 23 using CSR funds and will be later spread to other schools. We also published the following articles recentlyPIL filed in Delhi HC as students forced to sit in overcrowded classrooms due to incomplete school buildingA Public Interest Litigation (PIL) has been filed in the Delhi High Court regarding an incomplete school building in Mukundpur Village, Delhi, which is affecting the education and well-being of 8,000 students.
