THANE: As many as 11,991 household and sarvajanik idols of the goddess were immersed at the 18 immersion sites in Thane on Dussehra which also marks the end of Navratri festival, officials said.The festivity and immersion processions remained peaceful thanks to the vigilance of the police and municipal authorities except for a stray incident where a stray firecracker from some passing procession is suspected to have landed in the balcony of an apartment near Civil hospital triggering a small fire. The blaze was however doused by local residents before rescue teams could reach the spot, informed civic officials.The highest volume of idol and Navratri garba (clay pot used for the festival) immersion were done at the Datta mandir ghat at Masunda lake with 3587 idols immersed followed by Parsik and Koleshet visarjan ghats that also saw several idols being brought for immersion till wee hours of Wednesday. Even as activists questioned if the administration had followed the mandate of the Central Pollution Control Board 2020 norms, the corporation claimed they have adhered to the recommendations across all the visarjan sites.
