‘605 crore road revamp work to finish by Feb ’24’

Thane: The Thane municipal commissioner has set a February 2024 deadline to complete works under the ambitious Rs 605 crore road-makeover plan in Thane.The announcement was made following a review meet of all the departments that have been instructed to complete all the works ahead of March 2024 when the code of conduct for the Lok Sabha elections could be announced.Bangar told the officials that the code of conduct for next years general elections might be imposed any time after March 1, 2024 and so he sought a prompt execution of works especially the road revamp work that is considered as a prestige project.A vast network of roads is scheduled to be upgraded and made motorist-friendly under the blanket initiative of Mukhyamantryanche Badalte Thane.Municipal officials said the city is a network of 381km road, of which, a majority has been upgraded and smoothened, while 172 km is left to be attended. Of these, the corporation has taken up revamp of 142km roads for which the state okayed Rs 214 crore and Rs 391 crore funds. Of the 142 km, 10km would be concretised and another 55 km would be revamped using ultra-thin white topping (UTWT) technology while the rest would be laid with asphalt, officials informed.The commissioner has asked officials to complete works including those pertaining to roads, toilets, and repair of school buildings before the model code comes into effect ahead of next years Lok Sabha polls. Tenders for the newly proposed works should be published in advance to ensure that they start before February 2024, it said, adding that all road works in the city that had been stopped during the monsoon have been restarted, said an official.Bangar also expressed dissatisfaction over the functioning of the garden department and directed the teams to ensure the parks and gardens in various public places be maintained. The MMRDA has expedited work on all Metro lines, with approximately 81.5% of the civil work for Phase 1 already completed.MMC to asphalt disappeared Navelim roadThe Margao Municipal Council has invited e-tenders for developing a road in Navelim, in accordance with a court ruling. The court found that the proposed road had already been constructed by the original landowners, but had strangely disappeared. The court ordered the MMC to asphalt the road within two months, regardless of whether the road had disappeared or not. The court also stated that the MMC cannot avoid this exercise and the original owners cannot object to it.
