Maharashtra: Dad sexually assaults minor, dies by suicide

THANE: A 40-year-old man died by suicide by jumping in front of a running local train after his minor daughter accused him of sexual assault in Badlapur. The accused stayed with his daughter and son while his wife was employed in the UAE. The police said incident came to light recently when victim had come to her grandmothers house due to festival season.During her stay, the victims grandmother found her behaviour strange and she used to remain ill as well resulting in her grandmother enquire with the child. She was shocked when the girl informed her that he father was sexually abusing her for the last six months. Learning about incident, the grandmother informed the childs mother. Angry with incident her mother, along with her daughter approach Badlapur police station filing an FIR against the accused under rape and Pocso (Prevention of Children from Sexual Offences) Act. The police however said after registering an FIR they were searching for the accused but on Friday they learnt that the accused ended his life by jumping in front of local train near Badlapur railway station.After the incident victims mother said, My husband was unable to bear our expenses hence I decided to work in UAE leaving my kids behind thinking he will take care of child but I am shocked at what he did with his own minor daughter. They suggested replacing the term child pornography with Child Sexual Abuse Material in the Pocso Act and defining sexually explicit under the IT Act for better identification and removal of online CSAM. The NHRC also proposed including Virtual Private Network (VPN) service providers, Virtual Private Servers (VPS), and cloud service providers in the definition of intermediary. They called for the expansion of the national database on sex offenders to include CSAM offenders, and recommended setting up specialized police units to handle CSAM-related matters.Supreme Court acquits woman accused of killing her newborn child, says no conclusive proof against herThe Supreme Court has acquitted a woman who was convicted for killing her newborn child due to lack of conclusive evidence. The court stated that sentencing someone requires proper appreciation of evidence and cannot be done in a perfunctory manner. It also criticized the cultural stereotypes and gender biases in the case, emphasizing the inviolable right to privacy for women. The court found that there was no solid foundation to establish the womans guilt and that the conviction was based on mere presumption. The Chhattisgarh High Courts decision to uphold the conviction was also criticized for lack of cogent reasons.
