RTI activist, 2 others held for threat to govt official, taking 1.5 lakh ransom

THANE: The anti-extortion cell of Thane has arrested three persons including an RTI activist for accepting Rs 1.5 lakh ransom from an official of registrar office in Kalwa.The accused have been identified as Santosh Hirey, 44, from Ambernath, Subhash Patil and Shamshad Pathan 48 from Nashik. Pathan and Hirey have monthly magazines and pose as journalists.Shivraj Patil, DCP (crime), said deputy registrar of Kalwa, Jayant Jople, registered a complaint with the anti-extortion cell of Thane crime branch.Patil said, The three accused were blackmailing the complainant that they have some incriminating evidence of corruption against him and if he doesnt pay them ransom money they will expose him through media. They also threatened to intimate his senior officials of registrar office and get him fired from his service and demanded Rs two lakh to suppress the matter. The officer added that Jople then approached Shekhar Bagde, senior inspector of the anti-extortion cell who then laid a trap and netted them while accepting Rs 1.5 lakh from him at a restaurant near Kalwa. The scamster showed her fake increases in her money and convinced her to pay more. Eventually, the scamster stopped replying and the victim realized she had been duped. A case has been registered with the police.
