18-year-old youth convicted for consuming drugs in public place

Thane: A magistrate court in Thane convicted an 18-year-old youth for consuming ganja in a public place and fined him Rs 3,000 in its order. The magistrate GS Bora found that the accused who is a resident of Bhayander East guilty under the Narcotic Drugs and Psychotropic Substances (NDPS) Act, 1985.The police patrolling in Bhayander area had caught the accused consuming ganja near New Golden Nest complex on October 15, 2023 at around 1.30 am.Subsequently he was booked under section 27 and section 8 (C) of the NDPS Act.During the hearing the magistrate had asked the accused if he confessed to the crime, to which the accused said yes and accordingly the accused was liable for punishment under the provisions of NDPS Act. The court in its order said that consuming narcotics substance is very serious offence in nature and if the accused is not punished, he will be motivated to repeat the offence again. Hence he is liable for the punishment, the magistrate said. The suspects have been apprehended and the security agencys license is being revoked.
