Three wards contribute 60% of Thane municipality’s property tax collection

Thane: Three municipal wards of Majiwada, Vartak Nagar and Naupada-Kopri of the total nine, have collectively contributed a lions share of over 60% of the total property tax collections at the end of seven months of the 2023-24 financial year, officials informed. Data on property tax collections reveals that the corporation managed to collect Rs 429 crore by October end and is likely to touch its tax collection target for this fiscal year. These three wards that incidentally comprise the majority of plush locales in the city are the biggest tax payer for the corporation, while the majorly development starved suburbs of Mumbra, Diva and Wagle estate seem to be generating the lowest revenue for the corporation.Interestingly, experts and activists from Thane have blamed the neglect of the municipal administration towards the extended suburbs which could be a reason why the residents may be discouraged to not pay up on time. There is barely any infrastructure provided by the municipal corporation in Mumbra and Diva, which probably is the reason why the administration has failed to see notable earnings from these suburbs. These stretches also frequently face water crises and pothole free roads in many parts of the city is still a distant dream, complained Rohidas Munde, a Diva resident. The situation is no different in the high revenue generating wards which are facing problems starting from traffic congestion to inadequate water supply to lack of proper footpaths and pothole free roads, and even open spaces. We are paying a high amount in the form of property taxes but are getting no proper services in return. The water supply is erratic and roads arent in good shape. The sewage network is also not connected to the mains, said a resident of Ghodbunder road. Meanwhile, the administration said the numbers are likely to improve in the coming months and denied there was any disparity in assigning developmental works in specific parts of the city.We also published the following articles recentlyGermany approves global minimum corporate taxGermanys parliament has approved the implementation of a global minimum corporate tax of 15%. The increase in tax revenue is expected to help governments recover from the COVID-19 pandemic and address cost-of-living issues. The PMC has issued directives for the establishment of official stalls, with roadside stalls and those without proper permissions being prohibited. Ward offices have been instructed to undertake drives to remove these stalls, in accordance with Bombay High Court directives to increase fire safety.
