Court acquits four arrested under MCOCA

THANE: Eleven years after four persons were booked under the stringent Maharashtra Control of Organised Crime Act (MCOCA), a special court in Thane acquitted the four who were arrested under the charges of dacoity at the Bhiwandi-based college in 2012. The judge, Amit Shete, while acquitting the accused Ghanshyam Babu Yadav 39, Vishal Ramprasad Yadav, 41, Rafik Moinuddin Shaikh,50, and Raju Sidhahari Pal, 33, said, ...the evidence brought on record falls short to say that the witnesses succeeded in establishing the chain of circumstances. The five security guards, hired without proper background checks, burst into an apartment and molested a woman and her domestic worker before robbing them. The accused had been monitoring the victims routines and assumed they had money. They used a tactic of flipping the circuit breaker to turn off the electricity and gain access to the apartment.Drugs planting accused trial not in NDPS courtThe Sharjah drugs planting case, in which baker Anthony Paul is the prime accused, has been transferred from the special NDPS court to the magistrates court. The judge ruled that since the drugs involved only qualified as a small quantity, and the maximum sentence was one year imprisonment, the case did not need to be tried by the special court. Paul was arrested for allegedly planting drugs on victims, including actor Chrisann Pereira, who spent 27 days in a Sharjah prison. The police believe that Paul alone planned to frame all five victims.
