Man grabs, rapes woman walking by Titwala tracks

KALYAN: A 30-year-old woman was dragged into bushes along railway tracks in Titwala while on her way back home and raped by a 35-year-old man on Monday night.Police said the accused, Nishant Chavan (35), followed her for a distance before grabbing her. A Kalyan GRP official said the woman, who works with a private company, got down at the station around 8.30pm and took her daily route along the tracks that led to her home when she realised that someone was following her.She immediately alerted her husband who was at his work in south Mumbai. The husband called up a friend to help her out, but before two of his friends could reach the spot, Chavan allegedly dragged the woman into nearby bushes and raped her. Chavan allegedly threatened the woman against speaking up.When the husbands two friends reached the spot, they found Chavan, nabbed him and handed him to Titwala police. Titwala police filing an FIR and handed the case over to the Kalyan GRP, which has jurisdiction over the site of the sexual assault.Police found that Chavan works with a private firm in Padgha and stays in Titwala. They have so far not found any criminal antecedents and are ascertaining if he had stalked the woman to understand her route and timing. Kalyan GRP on Tuesday produced him before the railway court, which remanded him in their custody.(The victims identity has not been revealed to protect her privacy as per Supreme court directives on cases related to sexual assault)
