THANE: Chief minister Eknath Shinde said on Sunday the state government was working on a plan to beautify Mumbai further, focusing on neglected areas such as dumpyards and spaces under flyovers and bridges. Shinde was responding to a request by singer Usha Mangeshkar for improving the condition of Mumbai city and suburbs after an event to mark the groundbreaking ceremony of a gurukul in Thane city. The gurukul is being constructed in the memory of the late Lata Mangeshkar. "Thane city has seen a transformation and we are expecting a similar makeover for Mumbai," she said, addressing the CM.Shinde later in a public address following the ceremony said, "We are working on beautifying Mumbai. We have already announced cement-concretising Mumbai roads and make them pothole free. Now, we are targeting neglected spots, including dumpyards and spaces under flyovers and bridges, that will be cleared of trash, debris and subsequently beautified and painted. Also, we are planning to scrub clean all city roads using treated waste water that will also help curb pollution levels," he said. Speaking about the Lata Mangeshkar gurukul, Shiv Sena MLA Pratap Sarnaik said the project that will come up at an amenity plot in Vartak Nagar was the brainchild of the singer herself. "Lata didi had once told me that Thane had so much potential and needed a music academy. Later, when I got the opportunity I approached the CM who readily agreed to the plan," he said. Shinde, who has been twice elected from the Kopri-Panchpakhadi constituency, doled out goodies for Thane city. He flagged off plans for upgrading water supply system along with rejuvenation of old wells that would act as alternative water supply sources. He announced street furniture for Thane while operning the foot over bridge outside Singhania high school for public use.
