74-year-old falls prey to KYC fraud, loses Rs 5.3L

THANE: A 74-year-old man was duped by an cyber fraudster who under the pretext of doing Know Your Customer (KYC) verification, siphoned off Rs 5.3 lakh from his bank account.The complainant is a resident of Almeida road. The complainant had received a call from a person who claimed to be an official from a private bank based in Bandra Kurla Complex.The caller told the victim that KYC verification of his bank account has been long due and asked for certain details including of pan card details.The victim enquired about the procedure for the KYC verification, the accused sent him a link and asked the victim to click on it and to follow certain procedure. In the meantime, the accused took the confidential details which are meant for customers only for maintaining the privacy of the account holders, said a police officer, on condition of anonymity.The unsuspecting victim followed the procedure and the accused using the link got the confidential details and siphoned off Rs 5.29 lakh from the victims bank account. The complainant realized that he had been cheated and thus registered a case with Naupada police station. The police said that they are investigating the case.
