Mum-Nagpur E-way: Tenders for intelligent traffic mgmt system soon

Thane: The Maharashtra State Road Development Corporation (MSRDC) will soon float tenders to introduce the Intelligent Traffic Management System (ITMS) on the Mumbai-Nagpur Samruddhi Expressway, in collaboration with the South Korea government, officials said.A senior official said the cost of the AI-based project is roughly Rs 1,250 crore and will be funded by the South Korea government. The ITMS that will entail a network of CCTV cameras along the entire stretch will not just monitor traffic movement on the highway for speeding and lane-cutting, but will also instantly alert the authorities about these violations. The authorities, located at designated spots, will instantly relay information about these violations and action will be initiated against the errant motorist. The tenders for the project could be floated soon and would take another year or year-and-a-half to start operations after the bids are finalised, said the official.Around 600km of the 701km Expressway is operational between Igatpuri and Nagpur, while the stretch till Thane is likely to be ready by next year, MSRDC officials said. The ATCS system automatically adjusts signal timing based on real-time data from Google Maps to ensure smooth flow of traffic. The intersections where signals will be installed include roads dividing sectors 83 and 84 and 102A and 103, as well as several chowks and junctions. The signals will help in better traffic management on new sector roads.Not just eways, lane driving will be a must on internal roads soonTraffic police in Gurgaon will launch lane enforcement on internal roads to reduce road accidents and streamline traffic movement. A pilot project will implement lane driving on two internal roads and gradually expand to cover others. Currently, lane driving is enforced only for commercial vehicles on expressways. The selected road stretches for lane driving will be Subhash Chowk to Millenium City Centre Metro station and IFFCO Chowk to Ardee City road. Lane markings, signboards, and education programs will be implemented to promote lane driving and issue challans for violations.
