Waterfront promenade sinks in Thane

Thane: A nearly 60m long portion of the reclaimed and beautified Gaimukh waterfront has sunk following which authorities have barricadedthe stretch, officials informed on Wednesday evening. The affected portion of the promenade has been shut for public use. Luckily, no one was injured in the incident. Officials from the Maharashtra Maritime Board (MMB) that had constructed the promenade said they have roped in IIT-Bombay experts to study the situation and suggest corrective action.Yasin Tadvi, in-charge at the Thane regional disaster management cell informed that they received a call about a portion of the walkway of the beautified creek front along the water body had started sinking. Prima facie, it seems a portion of the sheet pile supporting the promenade got corroded and weakened, leading the surface to settle down by a few inches.
