Labourer falls from height of 7 metres at Metro site, dies

Thane: A 30-year-old labourer died after falling from a height of seven metres at a Metro rail construction site near Thane RTO office on Wednesday evening.The victim has been identified as Dhananjay Chouhan, a resident of Kushinagar, Uttar Pradesh. An official from the Regional Disaster Management Cell informed that the incident occurred on the Metro 4 (Wadala-Kasarvadavali route).The deceased was putting a grill on theduct of the Metro along with two other workers including his cousin. He had put up a safety belt as well as harness but it is suspected that he lost control, fell on ground and died, said Ravi Kshirsagar, senior inspector of naupada police station. He was rushed to a hospital where he was declared dead. MMRDA said that the General Consultant (GC) has been asked to submit a report but as an immediate penal measure, the contractor has been levied a penalty of Rs 5 lakhs and GC has been levied a penalty of Rs 1 lakh.
