Thane administration considers separate dam reservation for Kalyan-Dombivli

KALYAN: In response to the persistent demand from representatives of the burgeoning Kalyan-Dombivli region, MLA Vishwanath Bhoir of Kalyan West assembly has successfully pushed for the reservation of the Kushivali dam in Ambernath taluka for the Kalyan-Dombivli Municipal Corporation (KDMC). The Thane district administration has shown a positive inclination towards this proposal and has instructed the water resources department and KDMC to submit a comprehensive report on the matter.A crucial meeting discussing proposed development works in the Kalyan West Constituency took place on Tuesday, spearheaded by MLA Bhoir, district collector Ashok Shingare, and KDMC chief Dr Indumati Jakhar. The urban expansion in Kalyan and Dombivli over the last decade has resulted in increased water demand, putting pressure on basic amenities and leading to water problems in several housing complexes.Recognizing the severity of the water problem and its potential escalation, MLA Vishwanath Bhoir approached Chief Minister Eknath Shinde, advocating for a separate dam for Kalyan-Dombivli. Bhoir specifically proposed reserving the Kushivali dam in Ambernath taluka for the region or increasing the water quota from this dam for KDMC.Responding to Bhoirs concerns, Chief Minister Eknath Shinde directed the Thane district administration to take necessary action and conduct a joint meeting with district and KDMC administration. In the recent meeting, Thane Collector Ashok Shingare instructed the Water Resources Department to submit a comprehensive report on the water storage of Kushivali Dam. Simultaneously, KDMC was directed to provide data on the anticipated population growth and water requirements for the next thirty years. With the current population in Kalyan-Dombivli standing at approximately 24 lakh, receiving 423 million liters of water per day, the projections for 2032, 2042, and 2052 indicate a growing population and escalating daily water requirements. Considering these statistics, MLA Bhoir emphasized the critical need for a separate dam to ensure an ample water supply. He expressed confidence that Chief Minister Eknath Shindes sensitivity to the issue will lead to a judicious decision in favor of an independent dam or an increased water storage quota for the residents of Kalyan-Dombivli.
