Varanasi: A Dalit youth identified as Sudeep Kumar alias Laddu (32) and his friend Vikas (22) were attacked with knives by some miscreants on a platform of the Chilkahar railway station under the limits of Gadwar police station on Friday. Sudeep died while Vikas is battling for life at a trauma centre in Varanasi. The incident led to protest by locals and police had to struggle to claim the body from them to send for postmortem. Ballia SP S Anand said on Saturday that the attack on Sudeep was fallout of old enmity and added that Gadwar inspector Rajkumar Singh had been suspended for not initiating necessary preventive action in this connection. A named FIR was lodged under section of IPC and SC/ST Act against 12 assailants and three identified as Ravi Singh, Niraj Singh and Ayush Singh alias Rancho had been arrested from ticket counter of Jigni railway station on Saturday, said Anand, adding that search was on for the other accused.On Friday afternoon, Sudeep, a native of Chilkahar village and Vikas were standing on the railway platform when some youths of his village attacked them with knives. The incident led to chaos at the railway station. After the assailants fled the scene, locals rushed the injured to the local hospital where doctors declared Sudeep as brought dead. The SP said that in view of Vikass critical condition, doctors referred him to trauma centre of BHU in Varanasi, where his condition remained serious.Angry locals blocked the Ballia-Rasda road. Apart from SP and ASP DP Tiwari many officials assured them of early arrest of the accused but the protesters kept demanding compensation for Sudeeps family and government job for his widow. Later, when SDM Rasda Sadanand Saroj assured their demands would be fulfilled, they called off the stir and the body was sent for postmortem.Sudeeps uncle Bholaram lodged named FIR against 12 youths of Chilkahar village. Protesters alleged that despite previous incidents of attacks on Sudeep by the accused youths, Gadwar police did not take any of his three complaints seriously and compelled him to sign a compromise with them. The family claimed that Sudeep had been targeted by same assailants four days ago but police did not register a case then.
