Varanasi: In view of the spread of dengue in the district, the Shiv Prasad Gupta divisional hospital will be equipped with a platelets apheresis machine, financed by former minister and Varanasi City South MLA, Neelkanth Tiwari from his MLA funds.Dengue has spread widely in the district and the demand of platelets has increased. In the blood bank of the divisional hospital, platelets are still being extracted from blood using the old technology of component separation, which requires many donors.CMO Sandeep Chowdhary said with installation of the machine, it will now be possible to extract platelets from a single donor as per the need of a patient using the Single Donor Platelets (SDP) method. According to Chowdhary, platelets in this process are released from the blood within an hour. The blood is extracted from the donors body and taken to the machine, from where platelets are separated and infused into the patients body while the remaining blood is infused back into the donors body. The remarkable part is that the donor can donate platelets again after 72 hours. The number of platelets increases by 50, 000 to 60,000 in a patient using this method. In Random Donor Platelets (RDP) method, blood is collected was from three to four donors before platelets are separated. The process takes at least six hours. After donating blood once, blood may be donated again only after three months. Transfusion of one unit of blood through RDP increases platelet count by only 5,000. In RDP technique, the recipient is given platelets of his/her matching group from blood bank and in return, blood is donated from a donor of any blood group.
