Police Commemoration Day: Floral tributes paid to cops

Varanasi: Rich tributes were paid to policemen who laid downs their lives in Ladakh on October 21, 1959 and other operations, at the special ceremonies organised at Police Lines ground in Varanasi and adjoining districts on the occasion of Police Commemoration Day on Saturday. At Police Lines in Varanasi, commissioner of police Ashok Mutha Jain offered floral tributes to the cops who sacrificed their lives in the line of duty.Similar tribute ceremonies were also organised at the Police Lines of all neighbouring districts including Sonbhadra, where SP Yashvir Singh paid floral tributes. While addressing these ceremonies, the officials recalled the supreme sacrifice given by three policemen in Uttar Pradesh district in past one year and also those who laid down their lives in other states.They highlighted that on October 21 (1959), 10 valiant policemen laid down their lives in an ambush laid by heavily armed Chinese troops at Hot Springs, Ladakh. In view of it, October 21 is observed in commemoration of these martyrs and of all other police personnel killed on duty. These events are recognition of the sacrifices made by police personnel and their paramount role in preserving national security and integrity. The officials said, this day gives police forces a sense of national identity, pride, unity of purpose, common history and destiny, besides reinforcing their commitment to protect the nation even at the cost of their lives.11 NDRF battalion also hosted a tribute ceremony at its campus in Sanskritik Sankul. DIG Manoj Kumar Sharma read the names of 188 police and paramilitary personnel, who sacrificed their lives in past 12 months in the country to pay tributes to them. He acknowledged the sacrifices made by these personnel and their families, stating that the country will never forget their contributions. Shah highlighted the challenging nature of the police job, with officers often working long hours away from their families, guarding the countrys borders and ensuring law and order. He also emphasized the governments commitment to the welfare and safety of police personnel. October 21 is observed annually to honor these martyrs and all other police personnel who died in the line of duty.Three police personnel from TN died in line of duty in last one year, says DGPThree police personnel from Tamil Nadu were among the 188 police and paramilitary personnel who lost their lives in the line of duty in India from September 2022 to August 2023. The names of the deceased were mentioned by DGP Shankar Jiwal during the Police Commemoration Day parade in Chennai. A wreath was also laid at the martyrs memorial in the DGP office premises. The day commemorates the sacrifice of CRPF and Indo-Tibetan Border Force personnel who were ambushed by the Chinese army in Ladakh in 1959.
