Varanasi: The customs officials arrested a man for allegedly carrying 633 grams smuggled gold worth Rs 38 lakhs, concealed in his rectum at Lal Bahadur Shastri International Airport here on Sunday.While frisking the passengers after arrival of Sharjah-Varanasi flight, the officials spotted a passenger identified as Sandeep Kumar of Chaubeypur walking abnormally. On being suspicious, the officials checked him properly, during which, metallic objects were noticed in his rectum.Later, doctors at a hospital extracted three capsules containing gold paste from his rectum., following which the customs officials arrested him and seized the gold.During interrogation, he confessed that he had gone to UAE to earn livelihood.The agent he had hired had sent him there on a tourist visa. With the end of visa period, he was served a notice to leave the country while he had also lost his job. He contacted many people seeking help to return to his hometown, during which he came in contact with gold smugglers. The accused, part of a gold smuggling syndicate operating between Mumbai and Dubai, had travelled from Abu Dhabi with gold paste. The DRI officials found the gold paste and iPhones in the checked-in baggage and concealed on the passengers bodies. The three individuals have been arrested and are being investigated under the Customs Act, 1962.
