Two members of gang involved in beef trade arrested

Varanasi: Mau police on Monday nabbed two members of a gang involved in illegal beef trade, when they were trying to escape after opening fire on a team of Mohammadabad Gohna police station.Mau SP Avinash Pandey said that on getting inputs regarding movement of the gang members, the Mohammadabad Gohna cops cordoned Madaiya Chatti-Kamalpur Kolaura road and started checking all vehicles passing by. During checking, two motorcycle-borne youths opened fire on the cops in an attempt to prevent being stopped.However, the tyre of their motorcycle slipped on mud and it fell on the ground. The cops, who were chasing them, nabbed the duo along with two countrymade revolvers and live cartridges. The arrested miscreants were identified as Mohd Anas and Jamil Ahmed of Hatti Madari area under Kotwali police station.During further probe, it came to light that the two were involved in several cases of cattle smuggling and illegal slaughtering, and cash reward of Rs 25,000 had been announced on each of them.It was also revealed that Gufran Ahmed of Bandikala area was the leader of their gang. The two used to bring cattle in Gufrans SUV to his place where they were slaughtered. After slaughtering, the beef was packed in small plastic bags and delivered to homes of selected customers.
