BHU students, alumni take out march for better security

Varanasi: Days after a girl student of IIT-BHU was sexually harassed by three motorcycle-borne miscreants, a group of students and alumni took out a march under the banner of Hum BHU ke Log on Monday.The group demanded action against those involved in the molestation of the girl, enhanced security measures for women on campus and steps to bring IIT-BHU under the BHU governance.They also welcomed the BHU administrations move to withdraw the proposal of construction of a boundary wall for IIT-BHU for controlled access.The group gathered near Vishwanath temple and marched towards Malviya Bhawan. Addressing the gathering, the students demanded necessary amendments in law and by-laws to bring IIT-BHU under BHU governance to avoid recurrence of such incidents. On the boundary wall proposal, they said that drawing a line of partition on university campus would not be allowed as it in any way will not serve the purpose.The speakers said that the issue of security and safety of students, especially women, on campus is an important one and immediate measures should be initiated.Participants carried posters of BHU founder Pt Mahamana Madan Mohan Malviya and university flags during their march.Former students union vice president Arvind Shukla, Virendra Singh, Patanjali Pandey and Mrityunjay Tiwari addressed the gathering.Meanwhile, the BHU unit of Akhil Bharatiya Vidyarthi Parishad (ABVP) welcomed the decision of varsity administration to withdraw the proposal for the division of the BHU campus. It demanded robust security arrangements, including an enhanced security force, CCTV surveillance, and measures to curb external disruptions.Unit president Abhay Pratap Singh strongly condemned the assault on organisation workers by some groups of left wing activists.It is disheartening to see certain student organizations attempting to politicize the issue, he said.Worth mentioning , on the intervening night of November 1 and November 2, a girl student of IIT-BHU was sexually harassed by three motorcycle-borne miscreants. The incident led to a massive sit-in and demonstration on IIT-BHU campus by thousands of students.As one of the solutions for security on campus, the IIT-BHU administration and district administration assured the agitating students that work would begin soon for a boundary wall around the institute for controlled access.It pacified the situation on IIT-BHU campus, but sparked protests on the BHU campus. An FIR has been lodged, and authorities are working to identify the individuals responsible. A large gathering of students protested near IIT-BHUs Rajputana Hostel in response to the incident. The victims identity has not been revealed, following Supreme Court directives on cases related to sexual assault.
