Varanasi: Former gram pradhan of Jayapur, Durgavati Devi, died of cardiac arrest at her residence on Wednesday. She was 65. Jayapur is the first village that was adopted by Prime Minister Narendra Modi under Saansad Adarsh Gram Yojana in Varanasi in 2014. During his stay in Jayapur to mark the adoption of village under SAGY on November 7, 2014, Modi had won hearts by leaving his seat to adjust the microphone in front of Durgavati while she was welcoming him, as her voice was not audible.She sent rakhi to Modi, who had termed her as his sister.Her brother-in-law Narain Patel and nephew Rahul Singh Patel said Durgavati suffered heart attack on Wednesday morning and family members rushed her to a private hospital. On reaching the hospital, doctors declared her brought dead, they said, adding that the family cremated her on the banks of Ganga near Adalpura. Durgavati, became gram Pradhan of Jayapur in 2008, following death of her husband in a road accident and stayed in her office till 2015. She came to limelight when, after winning Lok Sabha election from Varanasi, Modi announced adoption of Jayapur under SAGY and reached Jayapur to address a public meeting.At the beginning of his speech, Modi referred to Durgavati Devi as his respected sister and when she replied to his question saying she had studied up to class eight, Modi said, Look at her confidence and it is because of her education.
