Varanasi: Prof. Wangchuk Dorjee Negi assumed charge as the Vice-Chancellor of the Central Institute of Higher Tibetan Education (Deemed to be University) in pursuance of the orders of the Ministry of Culture, on Monday.Prof. Negi had been working as a professor in the department of Mool Shastra and was holding the additional charge of the VC since April 13 this year. His present appointment is for the next five years. On the occasion of assuming charge, the registrar, dean of Faculty, heads of departments, administrative officers and student group of the university were present.Talking to reporters, Prof. Negi pointed out his priorities regarding the development of the university. He said that one of the main objectives of the university is to translate or revive those texts which were originally written in Sanskrit language but became extinct over time but are still available in the form of Tibetan translation. To carry out this work efficiently, there is a need for Tibetan classical scholars who are also sufficiently proficient in Sanskrit/Hindi language. Keeping this in mind, intensive Sanskrit training programs were organized in the university in 1990s, which provided the required number of scholars. Even at present, keeping in view the needs of the department of translation, restoration and research of rare Buddhist texts, intensive Sanskrit training programs will be organized again. He said that keeping in mind the Nalanda tradition, research code (Ph.D. Ordinance) has recently been published with the aim of promoting high level research. The students will be motivated to do research work accordingly so that high level research projects can be prepared.Efforts will be made for recruitment to the vacant posts of academic, non-academic and research departments in the university. A 50-bed hospital being built by the university with the financial assistance of the central government for the study, training and treatment of Sowa-Rigpa (Tibetan-Himalayan system of medicine), is in its final stage. Efforts will be made to launch it in January next, he added. The VC said that the convocation ceremony could not be organized in the university in the last few years due to the disruption of the Covid-19 pandemic. Efforts will be made to organize the convocation ceremony as soon as possible in the coming months and distribute certificates to the students. He further said that in view of the objectives of the new education policy and to increase the number of students, monthly and one-year online diplomas in Yoga, Vipassana, Sanskrit and Pali language as well as Sowa Rigpa, Bhote Astrology, Tibetan Thangka Painting and Tibetan Woodcraft will be started. Collaboration with national and international Buddhist institutions will be encouraged for development in the field of research and publication in the institutes library.
