Property tax defaulters face legal proceedings

Varanasi: Varanasi Municipal Corporation (VMC) on Tuesday initiated attachment proceedings against big house tax defaulters. However, as soon as the proceedings were initiated against a hotel in Lahurabir locality, the defaulter paid the dues of Rs 6.25 lakh. Similarly, an amount of Rs four lakh was paid by another defaulter soon after the attachment proceedings began.Earlier, on the direction of municipal commissioner Akshat Verma, the Varanasi Municipal Corporation had served notices to defaulters. They were asked to clear dues or face attachment. The list of defaulters was also published in newspapers. Meanwhile, the municipal commissioner, along with other officials took stock of sanitation and cleanliness in various localities, including circuit house, police line crossing, Maqbool Alam Road, Chowkaghat, Sampurnanand Sanskrit University main road, Lahuravir crossing, Piplani Katra, Kabirchaura, Maidagin, Town Hall and shelter home, Visheshwarganj Galla Mandi and streets of Kal Bhairav Ward. The officials also inspected the community toilet near Visheshwarganj Galla Mandi.It was found that the electronic POS machine was lying nonfunctional and the toilet was not cleaned regularly. The commissioner prioritized road repairs, removal of construction debris, and maintenance of cleanliness. He also emphasized the maintenance of main roads, footpaths, tree branches, streetlights, traffic signals, street cleaning, and firefighting system for the upcoming state legislature session. Additionally, Chaudhari instructed officials to provide drinking water and arrange special buses for the convenience of citizens. In a separate drive, the NMC removed illegal vendors from sidewalks and roads in several zones.NCLT issues notice to Byjus over BCCI plea claiming Rs 158 crore defaultThe NCLT, a Bengaluru-based bench, has issued a notice to Think & Learn Pvt Ltd, known as Byjus, in response to a petition filed by the BCCI. The BCCI claims dues of Rs 158 crore as an operational creditor under section 9 of the Insolvency & Bankruptcy Code 2016. The NCLT has granted two weeks for Byjus to respond and one week for the BCCI to file a rejoinder. The matter will be listed for the next hearing on December 22, 2023.
