4 looters held after encounter with cops

Varanasi: Four looters were arrested following an encounter with Chandauli police in Jalebiamod area on Wednesday. The looters also suffered bullet injuries in their legs and hands during the encounter.SP Chandauli Anil Kumar said acting on a tip-off, a joint team from Naugarh and Chakarghatta police stations cordoned Dilbagra hill and started checking vehicles.Seeing the cops, some miscreants opened fir e at the cops from a stationary SUV. When the cops retaliated, two of them suffered bullet injuries while their other associates tried to flee with the SUV.Later, the police team alerted Chakia police and started chasing the SUV. At Jalebiamod, police surrounded the miscreants, they again opened fire at the cops, said the SP adding that the cops later retaliated, injuring two miscreants.All the injured, identified as Sonu alias Anil Singh of Prayagraj, Fagu Sahani, Anmol Patel and Sunil Sonkar of Mirzapur, were rushed to hospital. Besides, the cops recovered four country-made revolvers, live cartridges and four mobile phones from their possession. They also seized the the SUV, which was looted from Dilbagra hill at gunpoint on December 3.During investigation, policefound that 24 cases were lodged against Patel in Mirzapur, Sonbhadra and other districts and he was also booked under Gangsters Act in past. The inquiry found no case against Gupta, and the police confirmed that they did not know him. The US authorities alleged that Gupta was assured his Gujarat case would be taken care of by an Indian government official referred to as CC-1. Gupta was also offered a meeting with a Deputy Commissioner of Police. However, sources in Gujarat Police have not found any suspicious person named Nikhil Gupta involved in arms or drugs smuggling.HC opens door for investigation against 6 cops, 2 doctors in custodial death caseThe Uttarakhand High Court (HC) stayed the Tehri Garhwal district judges order nullifying the chief judicial magistrates (CJM) directive to issue summons to six cops and two doctors in a custodial death case under Indian Penal Code sections 304 and 201. Svaroop Singh died in police custody in 2011, and his brother filed a complaint accusing the cops and doctors of murder and evidence tampering. The CJM courts order was challenged and quashed by the district judge, but the HC has now stayed that order and issued a notice to the accused.
