  • IIT Bombay established in 1958

    Established in 1958, the second of its kind, IIT Bombay was the first to be set up with foreign assistance. The institute is recognised worldwide as a leader in the field of engineering education and research. It was followed by those at Madras (1959), Kanpur (1959) and Delhi (1961).

  • Forced landing of Dan-Air Avro York airplane at Gurgaon, killed 4 occupants

    The Dan-Air Avro York airplane crash was a fatal accident. The aircraft crashed on 25 May 1958 during a forced landing at Gurgaon, Haryana, India, after an engine had caught fire en route from Karachi to Delhi. Four of the five occupants of the aircraft were killed.

  • Milkha Singh won 2 Golds at 1958 Asian Games held in Tokyo

    India participated in the 1958 Asian Games—Third Asian Games, held in the Tokyo, Japan from 24 May to 1 June 1958 where Indian athletes achieved total 14 medals with 5 golds and finished at the seventh spot in a medal table. The gold medalists were Milkha Singh, Mohinder Singh Gill, Parduman Singh Brar, Balkar Singh.

  • President Dr. Rajendra Prasad promulgated Armed Forces Special Powers Ordinance 1958

    The Armed Forces Special Powers Ordinance 1958 was promulgated by the President Dr. Rajendra Prasad on 22 May 1958. Later, it was replaced by the Armed Forces Special Powers Act, 1958 on 11 September 1958. The act empowered only the governors of the states and the administrators of the Union Territories to declare areas in the concerned State or the Union Territory as disturbed. 

  • First time Kishore Kumar and his two brothers Anoop and Ashok appear on silver screen

    'Chalti Ka Naam Gaadi'  is a 1958 Indian comedy film. The film featured Kishore Kumar and his two brothers Anoop Kumar and Ashok Kumar, and Madhubala. For the first time, the three brothers appeared on silver screen. 

  • Manufacturing of legendary ambassadors began

    In 1957 a tool line of the Series 3 Morris Oxford was transferred to India and production of the Ambassador car started in 1958. From 1958 to 1993 the Ambassador was fitted with a 1,489 cc engine.
