Maharashtra and Gujarat were created out of the bilingual Bombay State

Bombay State was finally dissolved with the formation of Maharashtra and Gujarat states on May 1, 1960. Bombay State was reorganised on linguistic lines i.e. Gujarati-speaking areas of Bombay State were partitioned into the state of Gujarat following Mahagujarat Movement.

Mughal-e-Azam became a major commercial success, earning 4 million (US$839,000 )in the first week and surpassed the Mother India (1957) revenue rate, and retained this record until Sholay (1975) surpassed its net revenue.

Popularly known as the flag carrier airline of India , on 21 February 1960, Air India International inducted its first Boeing 707–420, and became the first Asian airline to enter the Jet Age. Later, the airline inaugurated services to New York on 14 May 1960.

Paramjeet Singh shatters Milkha Singhs 38-year-old 400 m Olympic record and defeated him.  Milkha lost the bronze by just 0.1 seconds. Milkha never won a medal but when he came fourth at the Rome Olympics, breaking the Olympic record, the legend of the Flying Sikh was truly born. 

In 1960, while signing the Indust water treaty, the two countries reached a decisive step with the intervention of the World Bank wherein precise details were laid out regarding the way in which the waters would be distributed. The components of the treaty were fairly simple. The three western rivers such as Jhelum, Chenab and Indus whcih were allocated to Pakistan while India was given control over the three eastern rivers such as Ravi, Beas and Sutlej. 

 The field hockey tournament at the 1960 Summer Olympics in Rome, Italy was contested from August 26 to September 9, with sixteen participating teams. Only men competed in field hockey at these Games. Pakistan won the gold medal, defeating India in the final and ending India's run of six successive gold medals.
