The MG Hector has been launched at an attractive price tag of Rs 12.18 lakh (introductory, ex-showroom India). But does it offer better value than the Harrier, Compass and Creta? Let’s find out

MG has launched its first-ever product for India, the Hector, at an attractive price tag of Rs 12.81 lakh for the base-spec petrol variant. The most expensive variant, the diesel-powered Sharp, is priced at Rs 16.88 lakh (ex-showroom India). At these prices, the MG SUV competes against the Tata Harrier and the Jeep Compass. It even comes within range of the smaller Hyundai Creta. Here’s how they stack up:

• The Harrier is still the most affordable diesel choice here closely followed by the Hector .

• Since the Trailhawk is the best equipped in terms of features and 4x4 capabilities (the only SUV to offer a 4x4 drivetrain in this comparo), it is a lot more expensive than the competition.

• All the three mid-size SUVs are powered by the same 2.0-litre diesel engine built by Fiat, although in different states of tune.

• The diesel engine produces 140PS in the Harrier, 173PS in the Compass and 170PS in the Hector while torque remains the same at 350Nm. All three SUVs come with a 6-speed manual as standard.

• The Compass Trailhawk gets the same engine, albeit with updates to meet BS6 emission norms. It makes 170PS and is the only diesel-automatic (9-speed auto) option in the segment.

• The diesel variants of the Hyundai Creta listed above are offered with a 1.6-litre engine that produces 128PS and 260Nm. It can be had with either a 6-speed manual or a 6-speed automatic transmission.

• Hyundai also offers the Creta with a smaller 1.4-litre diesel priced between Rs 10 lakh to Rs 11.91 lakh.

• The Hector is the most affordable mid-size SUV with an automatic transmission. At Rs 12.18 lakh, it is also the most affordable mid-size SUV on sale today. However, it must be noted that the Hector’s prices are introductory and is set to increase in a few months.

• Being smaller in size and offering a naturally aspirated engine, the Creta petrol is priced from Rs 10 lakh.

• The Harrier does not get a petrol engine.

• The Compass is the most expensive petrol-powered SUV here.

• All Compass variants from Longitude onwards only get the DCT automatic transmission.

• The Hector is available with a 1.5-litre turbo-petrol that makes 143PS/250Nm. It is available with a 6-speed manual as well as a 6-speed dual-clutch auto from the Smart variant onwards.

• The Compass uses a 1.4-litre turbo-petrol which puts out 163PS/250Nm. It can be had with either a 6-speed manual or a 7-speed DCT.

• The Hyundai Creta is powered by a naturally-aspirated 1.6-litre petrol engine that produces 123PS and 151Nm of torque.

• The Creta comes with a choice of a 6-speed manual and a 6-speed automatic gearbox.

Mild-Hybrid

• The MG Hector is the only mid-size SUV to offer a mild-hybrid variant. It gets a 48V battery pairted to the 1.5-litre turbo-petrol engine.

• The petrol-hybrid variants are only available with a 6-speed manual gearbox.

• There is no change in performance ratings but it does come with a torque boost function that temporarily provides an extra 20Nm.
