Lok Sabha Election 2024: EC Urges People Of Metropolitan Cities To Vote After Low Voter Turnout Recorded In First Four Phases

Lok Sabha Polls:  Ahead of the fifth phase of the Lok Sabha polls, the Election Commission has appealed to the people to exercise their right to vote in large numbers. The Commission has made a special request to the urban people in particular saying that in cities like Mumbai, Thane and Lucknow, indifference towards voting has been seen in the previous elections. The Commission stated that even in the second phase, voting was less in metropolitan cities compared to other cities. In the wake of the same, the Commission has made a special appeal to the voters of big cities to come forward and cast votes in order to change the trend of low voting percentages. Lok Sabha Polls: Voting In Four Phase Concluded A meeting was also held by the commission with the commissioners of metro cities to chalk out a strategy to tackle voting apathy among urban voters. Earlier, the Commission had said that 66.95 voting turnout has been recorded in the last four phases. Nearly 45.1 crore voters exercised their franchise during the four polls. The total number of voters in February this year was approximately 97 crore. Now in the fifth phase of elections that is to take place on May 20, voting will be held on 49 seats in eight states and union territories including Bihar, Jammu and Kashmir, Ladakh, Jharkhand, Maharashtra, Odisha, Uttar Pradesh, and West Bengal. Apart from this, voting will also be held on 35 assembly seats of Odisha on Monday. About 9.47 lakh polling officers will be deployed at 94,732 polling stations in the fifth phase. There are a total of more than 8.95 crore voters, which include 4.69 crore male, 4.26 crore female and 5, 409 third gender voters.
