Srinagar Lok Sabha Election 2024: Voting Doubled To 37.53 % From 2019 Figure; No Incident Reported In First Polls Since Article 370 Abrogation

Srinagar Election 2024 Phase 4 LIVE Voting News: 37.53% polling was recorded in Srinagar at the end of the voting on Monday, higher than the overall turnout of the 2019 elections for the seat in Jammu and Kashmir, according to official figures. The voting in the Srinagar Lok Sabha constituency took place on April 13, which was also the first time Srinagar goes to poll after the abrogation of Article 370 in Jammu and Kashmir. The union territory is set to vote in five different phases for the five Lok Sabha seats in Jammu and Kashmir. The main contenders are Waheed Ur Rehman Para of the Peoples Democratic Party and Aga Syed Ruhullah Mehdi of the Jammu and Kashmir National Conference. Both Congress and BJP have opted out of the race for this seat. The election is significant as it reflects the political climate post the revocation of Article 370, with candidates focusing on addressing the concerns and healing the trauma of the local populace. PDPs Waheed Ur Rehman Para emphasised a tailored approach to meet the peoples needs, while NCs Aga Syed Ruhullah Mehdi criticised the BJPs perception of prosperity in the region, contrasting it with the reality on the ground. Previously, in the 2019 elections, the National Conference won the Srinagar seat with Farooq Abdullah receiving a majority vote share. The region, which has been under the central rule since the dissolution of the PDP-BJP government in 2018, has five Lok Sabha seats and is undergoing a five-phase voting process. This election is a pivotal moment for the people of Jammu and Kashmir, as they exercise their democratic rights amidst a transformed political landscape.
