Who Makes India’s Favorite Casino Games?

One Actor Attracts Two-Thirds of All Online Casino Turnover

One particular actor on the online casino games production scene consistently attracts two-thirds of the turnovers made by players in India; and to make things better, adds another few percent of market share to its dominance through one of its subsidiary brands.

This, of course, is the giant Swedish online casino content provider Evolution together with its sister brand specialized in live casino products Ezugi. According to its latest financial reports, the company realized operating revenues of roughly $1.35 billion for the 12-month period ending in September 2022, marking a 26.3% growth compared to the 12 months of 2021.

Evolution’s leading status in the sector has been examined by the research team at SevenJackpots Casino in their recently published primary data research paper titled “Top Game Shows and Live Casino Classics Captivate India”.

The study analyzes 10-months worth of internal game data including monetary turnovers and active user shares provided by one of the leading online casino platforms operating in India - Casino Days.

Products by Evolution from the game show category are responsible for 32.46% of the whole operator’s turnover, while the whole category attracted 34.48% of the turnover for the period. Roulette games contributed 22.91% of the total turnover, while Evolution’s share in that was 18.89%.

The Swedish game studio is similarly the leader in the categories of blackjack (8.93% out of 16.11% of the total turnover), baccarat (6.17 out of 7.45%), Sic Bo (2.69% out of 3.06%), Hold’em Poker (2.61% out of 2.69%), Dragon Tiger (2.17% out of 2.27%) and others.

Ezugi has assumed the lead for Indian classic card games Andar Bahar and Teen Patti, where the Evolution brand has quite modest market shares for a change.

Other Noticeable Game Studios

Despite the seemingly overwhelming dominance of one player, Evolution has not killed all competition. On the contrary, “the segment remains dynamic and competitive with hundreds of globally renowned game studios and thousands of games fighting for player attention,” the researchers at SevenJackpots highlight and point out to several game studios whose turnover shares are noticeable even on the backdrop of Evolution’s presence.

To put things into perspective, participating in the global online gambling market which was valued at $67.5 billion for 2021 by ReAnin with a “negligible” share of 0.01% is still a substantial enough business for the majority of companies and startups that exist.

Still, an operator like Malta-based Pragmatic Play is far from being negligible, even though its share of the generated turnover slumped sharply from above 35% in the beginning of 2022 and then continued to decline until it dropped below 10% in September before starting to recover in October.

All other game studios are placed in the lower areas of the turnover share graph below Ezugi, where it is bustling with activity. A single exception is provided by OnAir Entertainment, an emerging studio that sharply rose in prominence in the second half of last year.

The data examined by the SevenJackpots research team covers more than 5,500 games supplied by a total of 99 game studios including names like OneTouch Live, Relax Gaming, Spribe, Playson, Booongo, and Bombay Live whose products have attracted at least 1% of Casino Days active users.

The Separate Category of Slots

Slots show as the only popular category of casino games that are not preferably played with a live dealer, but this is due to their very nature, and has not been caused by other factors. Slots also appear to have their own separate category of game studios that produce them, as the SevenJackpots research paper reveals.

Pragmatic again takes the spotlight supplying almost two third, or 3.0% out of the 4.59% of the total turnover registered during the analyzed period. Formerly specialized in slots like the majority of studios that work in the category, Pragmatic now commands second leading positions in game shows, roulette, blackjack and other live casino subgenres.

Swedish developer Play’n Go (1.27% of turnovers) and British Push Gaming (0.32%) are the other major players in the slot category with hit titles like Moon Princess and Rise of Olympus or Jammin’ Jars and Razor Shark.

“Historically, slot titles have always been quick to shoot up in popularity or fall into oblivion when a new hit game emerges. Only a few remain as classics (such as Book of Dead), even after a few years time,” the researchers comment another unique aspect of slot games.
