India’s Industrial Output contracts to 16.6 percent

As per the data released by the government, India`s industrial output declines to 16.6 percent in June as against a 1.3 percent growth in the same month year ago.

India`s industrial output contracted for the four month in a row in June, though signaling a slight upward movement in operating conditions since March following the outbreak of coronavirus pandemic.

As per the data released by the government, India`s industrial output declines to 16.6 percent in June as against a 1.3 percent growth in the same month year ago.

"The Index for the month of June 2020 stands at 107.8 as compared to 53.6 and 89.5 for April 2020 and May 2020," the Ministry of Statistics and Programme Implementation has said in a release.

As per the release, quick estimates of IIP with base 2011-12 stands at 107.8 for the month of June and are likely to undergo a revision.

However, the statement noted that "It may not be appropriate to compare the IIP in the post-pandemic months with the IIP for months preceding the COVID 19 pandemic."

The Center further said that the IIP for the Mining, Manufacturing and Electricity sectors for the month of June 2020 stands at 85.4, 106.9 and 156.2 respectively.
